We took a family winter break trip to Tahoe Donner (Truckee), staying at our friend Teri's rental cabin for about 4 days.  Porter and Nico would have been 12 and 10 years old at this time.  We also took our dog Summer, who may not have been in snow before, but she sure seemed to like it!
